
Wijk aan Zee is a wonderfull town North of Holland that since 1936 part of Beverwijk in the province of North Holland. Wijk aan Zee was called the village of Wijk aan Duin, before it fell under the municipality of Beverwijk, Wijk aan Zee called Dune and a separate municipality. The village has about 2400 inhabitants. Wijk aan Zee is located on a road after wedged between the steel company Corus (formerly Hoogovens), the North Sea and the North Holland Dune Reserve. We can get there getting a train to Beverwijk, and then take bus 178 to Wijk aan Zee.

Until the middle of the nineteenth century Wijk aan Zee en Duin was a typical fishing village. The famous painter Rijckert Aertsz that around 1482 in Wijk aan Zee was born, was also son of a fisherman. The village did not have a port, which meant that during the nineteenth century in the competition with other fishing villages in the region they lost. There was an increasing use of larger ships, which have had less on the beach could be drawn as previously customary. Fishing in Wijk aan Zee died slowy. At around 1811 the forced poverty of an already starving population forced them to go to Beverwijk to trudge and beg.

The symbolic Meifestival(May Festival) celebrates each year the start of the summerseason in Wijk aan Zee.
